{"id":2123,"date":"2022-02-14T10:42:46","date_gmt":"2022-02-14T16:42:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dalemorin.com\/?p=2123"},"modified":"2022-02-20T10:43:35","modified_gmt":"2022-02-20T16:43:35","slug":"focus-mares-part-4b","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dalemorin.com\/?p=2123","title":{"rendered":"Focus Mares, part 4b"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now, on to the brakes.\u00a0 I decided to replace the Shimano calipers with Hope RX4+ calipers.\u00a0 The Hope calipers are 4 piston units, machined in a single piece of alloy, and are well regarded as quality calipers.<\/p>\n<p>Spending some time researching them, and found that they have an M5 port for bleeding, whereas the Shimano calipers use an M4 thread.\u00a0 When I opened the box, it was great to see that they included a syringe and fitting for bleeding the brake system.\u00a0 Pads are included as well, both sintered and organic &#8211; I will install the organic pads.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2121 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dalemorin.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/PXL_20220204_175138501-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dalemorin.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/PXL_20220204_175138501-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.dalemorin.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/PXL_20220204_175138501-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.dalemorin.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/PXL_20220204_175138501-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.dalemorin.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/PXL_20220204_175138501-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.dalemorin.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/PXL_20220204_175138501-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2120 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dalemorin.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/PXL_20220204_175156634-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dalemorin.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/PXL_20220204_175156634-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.dalemorin.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/PXL_20220204_175156634-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.dalemorin.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/PXL_20220204_175156634-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.dalemorin.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/PXL_20220204_175156634-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.dalemorin.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/PXL_20220204_175156634-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I also decided to install new BH90 brake hose at the same time.\u00a0 I have the Shimano brake bleed kit which includes a cup reservoir to use on the levers so that extra fluid can be pushed out the top of the system when removing air bubbles.\u00a0 Coupled with the Hope syringe and fitting that should be all that&#8217;s needed to maintain the brakes.\u00a0 I&#8217;m using Shimano brand mineral oil as well.<\/p>\n<p>I had Columbus Cycling replaced the brake hose for me, since they have the tools to do the job.\u00a0 While I like tools, they aren&#8217;t cheap and I don&#8217;t see this task as something that will need to be redone very often, if at all.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t take them long to finish that job.<\/p>\n<p>Bleeding the brakes was a bit trickier.\u00a0 The Hope calipers are known for hiding air in the pistons and can be difficult to get a firm lever.\u00a0 They have a process to use to get the brakes bled and working properly.\u00a0 I followed their procedure and the front brake is firm and works well.\u00a0 The rear brake works, but the lever isn&#8217;t as firm as the front.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll try rebleeding it and see if I can improve things.<\/p>\n<p>I was able to firm the rear lever up a bit more, but it&#8217;s still not as good as the front.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll try again after a ride and see what I can do.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Now, on to the brakes.\u00a0 I decided to replace the Shimano calipers with Hope RX4+ calipers.\u00a0 The Hope calipers are 4 piston units, machined in a single piece of alloy, and are well regarded as quality calipers.
